Unless my sources are mistaken, May 5th is all about some minor victory over the French back in the day, in some small town which is still just some small town.
There may be more to it, but as far as historically important stuff goes, that’s about it (until some US college students happened upon said small town, saw there was something being honored & decided it was party time)

I didn’t know it was being celebrated from day 1 (or close enough to it, giving it was the 1860′s) in California, so that’s something neat I learned today.
