The Japanese have a poop God (or spirit or something) and it is revered. The equivalent of medieval toilets were well maintained and cleaned. As such water borne diseases (like cholera) were less prevalent.
Compare this to ye-olde England where people flung their poop out the window.
Also the Greek God Venus (God of lust) was also in charge of poop or something. (Checks wikipedia) Kinda right: Venus was merged with Cloacina who was the God of sewers.
